Music is an integral part of life at Brighton State School, involving students, staff and parents. The aim of the program is to develop the creativity that is present in varying degrees in all children. We focus on students making music and developing the ability to think and express themselves in sound.
Each
class from prep to year 7 receive a half- hour music
lesson every week with our music specialist.. These
lessons are activity based with the children learning
the basic skills of music- beat, rhythm, pitch, singing,
movement, listening and musical literacy. Great emphasis
is placed on the “enjoyment” aspect.
Our
school music program is outcomes based and progresses
at 4 distinct sequential levels in accordance with
Education Queenslands’ The Arts syllabus- music strand.
At Brighton, the music core learning outcomes are covered as follows-
Prep - Year 1 : children work on achieving music Outcomes Level 1.
Years 2 - 3:children work on achieving music Outcomes Level 2.
Years 4 - 5 : children work on achieving music Outcomes Level 3.
Years 6 - 7 : children work on achieving music Outcomes Level 4.
Instrumental and choral programs
At Brighton State School, children are able to join our junior or senior choir. Both choirs are non-auditioned groups opened to all students at our school .The children sing and dance whilst learning aspects of team work and some basic choral techniques.
During the year the children perform at various functions and participate in fun and enjoyable choral competitions.
Please contact our school music specialist for more information.
Each year a selection process involving our year 4 - 6 students is held to identify children who have an aptitude for learning a Woodwind, Brass or Percussion instrument.
Students in yrs 4-6 who express a desire to learn an instrument undertake this process, and offers are then made to selected students to begin lessons the following year.
Education Queensland funds provide these children with one small group lesson each week and the loan of an instrument for their first year of tuition.
Instruments available for tuition from year 5 - 7:
Woodwind; flute, clarinet, alto/tenor saxophone
Brass; trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone, euphonium.
Percussion; percussion students play a variety of tuned and untuned instruments.
Children who continue on their instrument in the next year are expected to join our school senior concert band. Children learn aspects of team work and basic banding techniques, whilst enjoying the camaraderie of playing in a band with their peers.
During the year the children participate in band camps to accelerate learning and perform at competitive and non-competitive band functions.
It is well documented that children who participate in music programs demonstrate a significant improvement in life endeavours.
